Showing Up Matters
Letter from the Director | September 2026
September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and it is a reminder of something that applies far beyond any single month: sometimes one of the most important things we can do for another person is simply show up.
Show up and listen.
Ask the second question when “I’m fine” doesn’t quite sound fine.
Make the phone call. Send the text. Sit with someone who is going through a difficult season. Help them find counseling, medical care, community resources, or simply a safe place where they can talk honestly about what they are carrying.
Fred Rogers once said, “Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable.”
I love that thought because so often, hope begins when someone realizes they do not have to carry something alone.
At Hope Healthcare Services, we see this in many different ways. Sometimes showing up means providing a counseling appointment for someone who needs to talk. Sometimes it is helping a patient manage a health condition that has become overwhelming. Sometimes it is connecting someone with another organization or resource that can help meet a need we cannot. And sometimes it is simply taking the time to listen, pray, encourage, and remind someone that they matter.
We talk a lot about providing hope, help, and healing. But none of those happen from a distance. They happen when people are willing to step into the lives of others.
You do not have to be a counselor, physician, or healthcare professional to make a difference. We can all pay attention. We can all listen. We can all encourage someone to seek help. And we can all help make sure the people around us know they are not alone.
This September, I hope we will each look for an opportunity to show up for someone.
You may never fully know the difference it makes.
Blessings,
Cliff Sweazey
